Beoley First School Governing Body

Welcome to the Governors section of our school website.

What does our Governing Body do?

The Governing Body, together with the Headteacher, form the school Leadership and Management team and share responsibility for the school. Our main aim is to hold the school accountable for meeting the needs of its children. We address this in a variety of ways, such as reviewing resource allocation (including school budget), contributing to the creation of school development plans and monitoring the effectiveness of ensuing actions. Decisions are made by the Governing Body as a whole and individual governors have no ‘power’ as such and cannot speak or act on behalf of the Governing Body.

Who are we?

Our Governing Body is made up of people from various aspects of the school as well as the wider community and we are committed to a structure that offers a wide a range of skills that we can use to support the key strategic tasks we undertake.

At Beoley we have a mix of Parent governors, who are appointed through election by the parents of registered pupils in the school, Staff governors, who are elected by staff members, Co-opted governors, who are appointed by the Governing Body and a Local authority governor, who is also appointed by the Governing Body.

The Headteacher is automatically a governor by virtue of their appointment.

What does our work involve?

The full Governing Body meet twice a term to review a range of topics, including pupil performance statistics, status of actions to meet school and statutory targets and financial tracking reports, to name but a few things!

We also have sub-committees, meeting once a term, to carry out some of the work in relation to Finances, Staffing, Pay and Performance, Curriculum and Health & Safety/Buildings. We then have ad hoc meetings to manage any other items that come up during the academic year.

Each governor has an allocated year group and at least one subject that they oversee. All governors make at least one official visit per year to see the school ‘in action’, with many of our governors being in school for a variety of reasons throughout the year.

Most years we chose a focus for our official visit, so the governor can concentrate on and report back to the Governing Body on, a particular area of interest. This focus is normally decided by the Governing Body and is derived from our school development plan. This visit gives governors the chance to meet the children and ask them first hand, what they think of their school experience. They also get the chance to meet with the class teachers and their nominated subject co-ordinators to discuss assessment, resources, planning, training etc.

Although the role of governor can be challenging, it is also very rewarding. We do have vacancies for new governors from time to time and if you feel you could contribute to our team, please feel free to send us your details.

Should you wish to raise any concerns with your Governing Body, please send a request to our clerk, who will address this to the relevant governor(s).

Sallie-Ann Eaton
